Trichelia emetica, commonly known as the Natal mahogany, is an elegant, medium to large evergreen tree with a smooth, dark bark and a dense canopy of glossy, dark green leaves.
It has a graceful, upright growth habit that makes it an excellent choice for creating shade or adding a stately presence to any garden.
In the Western Cape, this tree thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun, though it can tolerate some shade. It is not frost-tolerant and may struggle with severe cold, but it does well in coastal conditions and can handle mild coastal exposure.
While not particularly wind-resistant, it can be used for screening in more sheltered spots.
Trichelia emetica produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by reddish-brown fruits that attract birds.
This tree’s impressive foliage, ability to adapt to coastal conditions, and aesthetic appeal make it a lovely addition to gardens looking for a hardy yet graceful specimen tree.
