Brachylaena discolor, commonly known as the Coast Silver Oak, is a hardy, evergreen tree or large shrub native to South Africa’s coastal regions.
Reaching heights of 4 to 10 meters in garden settings, it features striking foliage with dark green upper surfaces and silvery-white undersides, creating a shimmering effect in the wind.
From July to September, it produces nectar-rich, cream-white flowers that attract birds and bees, enhancing local biodiversity.
This fast-growing species is well-suited to the Western Cape’s climate, thriving in both full sun and shade, and tolerating a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils.
Its wind-resistant qualities make it an excellent choice for windbreaks and screening, particularly in coastal gardens where it can also aid in dune stabilization.
Brachylaena discolor is drought- and frost-resistant, though young plants may require protection from frost during their first year.
It responds well to pruning, allowing for easy maintenance as a hedge or standalone specimen. With its non-invasive root system and adaptability, this tree is an asset to gardens, parks, and schools in the Western Cape.
