Aloe barberae or the Tree Aloe, is Africa’s largest aloe species, capable of reaching heights up to 18 meters.
It boasts a striking sculptural form with a stout, smooth, grey trunk that can exceed 2.5 meters in diameter at the base, supporting a neat, rounded crown of dark green, arching leaves.
In mid-winter (June to July), it produces tubular flowers ranging from orange to salmon pink, which attract sunbirds, bees, and other pollinators. This species thrives in warm, well-drained river valleys and coastal forests with mild climates and annual rainfall between 1,016 to 1,524 mm.
In the Western Cape, particularly in areas like Cape Town, it has been successfully cultivated, provided it is planted in a sunny, well-drained location with ample space for its eventual size.
Aloidendron barberae is wind-tolerant and can handle coastal conditions, making it suitable for coastal gardens. However, it is sensitive to frost and should be protected during the first few years in frost-prone areas.
Due to its massive size and sculptural form, it serves as an excellent focal point in the garden but is not suitable for screening purposes. Additionally, its shallow-spreading, non-aggressive root system necessitates planting away from buildings and structures to accommodate its expansive base
