Hedge Bamboo

Bambusa multiplex, commonly known as Hedge Bamboo or Chinese Dwarf Bamboo, is a versatile, evergreen clumping bamboo that typically reaches heights of 20 to 35 feet (6 to 10 meters), depending on the cultivar.

It features dense, upright canes with lush green foliage, creating a graceful, slightly arching appearance. This species is well-suited for use as a privacy screen or windbreak due to its dense growth habit.

Bambusa multiplex thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soils, though it can adapt to various soil types. It is frost-tolerant, enduring temperatures down to approximately 15°F (-9°C), making it suitable for the Western Cape’s climate.

Additionally, it can handle coastal conditions, provided it is sheltered from strong winds to prevent stem damage. While bamboo species do flower, Bambusa multiplex flowers infrequently, often with many years between flowering events, so flowering is not a significant concern for most gardeners. Its non-invasive, clumping growth habit makes it an excellent choice for creating a lush, tropical aesthetic in your garden without the risk of uncontrolled spreading.
