Field maple

Acer Campestre, commonly known as the Field Maple or Hedge Maple, is a versatile deciduous tree native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa.

Typically reaching heights of 10 to 12 meters, it features a dense, rounded crown with dark green, lobed leaves that turn a warm golden yellow in autumn.

In spring, small yellow-green flowers emerge alongside the new foliage, providing a subtle yet attractive display.

This species is well-suited to the Western Cape’s climate, as it tolerates heat, drought, and frost, and is resilient against strong winds, including coastal sea breezes. Its adaptability to various soil types, including heavy clay and calcareous soils, makes it a robust choice for diverse planting sites.

Acer campestre is particularly valued for its ability to withstand heavy pruning, making it ideal for use as a tall, dense screening hedge or as a standalone specimen tree.

Additionally, it supports local wildlife by attracting bees, butterflies, and birds.
