The Vachellia karroo, or Sweet Thorn, is a hardy, fast-growing deciduous tree known for its golden-yellow, sweetly scented puffball flowers in summer, which attract bees, butterflies, and birds. Reaching 6–12 meters tall. It forms a dense, rounded canopy, making it excellent for shade, windbreaks, and screening.
It thrives in varied soils, from dry plains to riverbanks, and is highly wind-resistant, drought-tolerant, and frost-hardy.
While it can handle coastal conditions with some protection from direct salt spray, it excels in sunny, inland gardens.
With its ornamental beauty, ecological benefits, and resilience, the Sweet Thorn is a fantastic addition to any Western Cape landscape.
