Ptaeroxylon obliquum, commonly known as the Sneezewood, is a hardy, semi-deciduous tree with a striking upright growth habit and fine, feathery foliage that casts light, dappled shade.
It is well-suited to the Western Cape’s conditions, being highly drought-tolerant and able to withstand moderate frost once established.
Its dense wood makes it naturally wind-resistant, and while it can be used for screening, its more open canopy is better suited for ornamental planting or as a feature tree.
In spring and summer, it produces small, fragrant yellow-green flowers that attract pollinators, followed by winged seeds.
Though not ideal for very harsh coastal conditions, it can be managed in more sheltered coastal gardens.
This long-lived tree is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a tough, low-maintenance tree with historical significance, as its durable timber was once prized for its resistance to termites and rot.
